THE QUEEN OF COLOR: TOURMALINE

Tourmaline is the name for a group of related mineral species, with a very complex chemical composition. The name is derived of the word “tourmali”, this word in singhalese was used for colored gems, mostly zircons.

COLOR: The most important

Tourmalines exist in all colors: Multicolored, Bicolor, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Blue-Green, Purple, Violet, Brown, Neon Blue, Colorless, sometimes Asterism, Change Color and Trapiche. ALL.

The most expensive color varieties are Paraiba Tourmaline (vivid green and blue with copper bearing), Rubellite (vivid bright red), Indicolite (blue), Chrome Tourmaline (intense green) and Bicolor. The saturated colors have high demand, in the last years the less saturated colors (soft pink tourmalines) have become popular.

CUT & SIZES

Tourmaline is often cut into rectangular shapes because of its prismatic crystal habit, however Tourmaline's gems offer a huge variety of cuts: oval, round, emerald, pear, heart, trillion, fancy, cabochon, etc. Cat's eye tourmaline is cut into cabochon, and watermelon tourmaline is often cut into slices. Tourmaline is available in large sizes, however Paraiba tourmaline are common small sizes, as are Chrome Tourmalines or Rubellite.

CLARITY  & INCLUSIONS
Paraiba, Rubellite, Watermelon, Red and Pink tourmalines will show eye-visible inclusions unlike the green and blue tourmalines which will show eye-clean inclusions.
Cat's eye tourmaline is usually translucent to opaque (the chatoyancy is because to thin needle-like inclusions).

Typical inclusions: Interconnected two-phase inclusions typical for tourmaline ("trichite"), film-like liquid inclusions, parallel oriented hollow tubes, needle-like mineral inclusions and fractures.

 

MdMaya Gems uses the following clarity scale when grading gemstones.

Setting aside translucent and opaque gemstones, the first classification to take into account is: 

  • Type 1: Stones that are often inclusion free
  • Type 2: Stones that are usually included 
  • Type 3: Stones that are almost always included

CLARITY GRADES:

EYE CLEAN: Appears clean to the unaided eye. (Type 1, 2 and 3)
SLIGHTLY INCLUDED:
       Type 1: Minute inclusions difficult to see with the unaided eye.
       Type 2: Minor inclusions easy to see with the unaided eye.
       Type 3: Noticeable inclusions apparent to the unaided eye.
MODERATELY INCLUDED:
       Type 1: Minor inclusions somewhat easy to see with the unaided eye.
       Type 2: Noticeable inclusions apparent to the unaided eye.
       Type 3: Obvious inclusions very apparent to the unaided eye.
HEAVILY included: prominent inclusions that have a negative effect on appearance or durability.

SEVERELY INCLUDED: prominent inclusions that have a severe effect on appearance or durability or both. (Type 1, 2 and 3).
