Natural Tanzanite Gemstones – From Blue-Violet Elegance to Rare Brilliance

A Unique Gemstone Born from the Foot of Mount Kilimanjaro

Discovered only in Tanzania in the late 1960s, tanzanite is a one-source gemstone renowned for its striking blue-violet hues. Its rarity and vivid pleochroism—displaying different colors when viewed from different angles—make it a favorite among gem collectors and jewelry lovers alike.

The Allure of Blue-Violet Color

Natural tanzanite ranges from soft lavender to deep indigo, often shifting subtly between blue and purple under varying lighting. Its sophisticated palette complements both white and yellow gold, making it ideal for rings, pendants, and earrings with a distinctive, luxurious flair.

Gemological Rarity and Character

With a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale and a trichroic nature, each tanzanite gemstone reflects a complex internal world. Many stones are heat-treated to enhance color—a common and accepted practice—but unheated stones are especially prized. At MdMaya Gems, we carefully select pieces that showcase the finest color, cut, and clarity.

Tanzanite as a Birthstone and Celebratory Gem

Recognized as one of the official birthstones for December, tanzanite is also a popular choice for 24th wedding anniversaries. Whether you're looking for a meaningful gift or a unique gemstone for custom jewelry, tanzanite offers both elegance and exclusivity.
