Kunzite is the pink to purplish variety of spodumene, a lithium aluminum silicate named in honor of George F. Kunz, a pioneering American gemologist. This gemstone is prized for its delicate color, often ranging from soft pink to vibrant lilac, with a glassy luster and excellent transparency.
Kunzite’s pastel palette makes it an ideal choice for feminine and expressive jewelry. Despite its relatively low hardness (6–7 on the Mohs scale), it is suitable for earrings and pendants when worn with care. Large specimens with vivid color and good clarity are still available at accessible prices, making this gem both collectible and wearable.
The green variety of spodumene is known as Hiddenite, and while rarer, it shares many of Kunzite’s physical characteristics. Together, these spodumene gems offer a unique blend of beauty and character for those drawn to subtle charm and uncommon minerals.
